Mekka Toussaint

Mekka Toussaint is an impressive 15 year old sophomore at Mary Lyon High School. You can find her most Saturday mornings giving out fruits and vegetables from the food pantry, organized by Muhammad’s Mosque #11, at Grove Hall, the busy hub, linking Dorchester and Roxbury. Her inner motivation for getting up early and out there, especially during the COVID pandemic, comes from witnessing the urgent need for so many in her community to get healthy food for their families. She would want someone to make a similar effort for her family if ever needed.

Mekka’s commitment runs deep. Giving back has been encouraged by her father since she was 5 years old. She is profoundly inspired by her father, a first generation Haitian American who was born in Florida and raised his family in a disciplined and structured environment here in Boston, adhering to the tenants of the Nation of Islam. Mekka is striking her own path, especially at Mary Lyon High School.

Serving on the Equity Round Table with teachers, headmaster, and other students, Mekka is advocating for the hiring of more teachers of color who reflect Mary Lyon’s student population more equitably. This lack of sufficient access to teachers of color negatively impacts the self esteem and confidence of Black and Brown students who, like all students, need the advice, support, and validation of teachers and staff who share similar life experiences and can relate more authentically. She hopes to see an equal racial makeup of teachers by the time she graduates in two years.

As Vice President of the Student Council, Mekka is becoming actively involved in Quest’s social justice initiatives. She is interested in helping her peers and teachers become not only aware of injustices in the community but also active in creating change and leveling the playing field.

Mekka is strong, persistent, driven and articulate. She is learning at a young age how to step into her power, be heard and understood.

Louis Sanchez

Louis, a son of two Puerto Rican parents, traveled back to his home country, Puerto Rico, and participated in a Quest service project with his Boston Green Academy team in April. Louis had previously attended middle school in Puerto Rico before transferring to Boston Green Academy in 9th grade. He was deeply excited to revisit not only the land but also his loved ones who currently reside there. Louis profoundly appreciated his aunts, uncles, and cousins who gathered to meet with and embrace him multiple times throughout the trip. In addition, meeting local Puerto Rican students from Nuestra Escuela, a non-traditional school aimed to empower students through mental health and healing, had an enormous impact on Louis. Staying and working side by side with these students in the cleanup project forced him to deeply connect not only with people he had never met but also with himself. In reflection circles, he embraced his vulnerability and opened up to complete strangers. Along the way, he developed long-lasting, true friendships with these students from Nuestra Escuela. He still keeps in frequent contact with many of them today and even has plans to return to Puerto Rico to spend time at Nuestra Escuela.

Louis returned to Boston with a newfound love and willingness to embrace new people, challenges, and opportunities. He looks forward to one day returning to Puerto Rico as a successful man so that he can further serve his community back home.

We are on a quest to empower urban students from Boston Public Schools by helping them develop leadership skills through planning and participating in national or international service learning trips.
